Centella and asiaticoside: two different goods under one plant

Centella extract and purified asiaticoside are sold as if they were the same raw material, though the price differs several-fold. We look at what you are actually buying.

Centella asiatica is one of the most recognisable plants in Korean cosmetics, and that is exactly why so much confusion has gathered around it. Goods that differ in price by tens of times circulate on the market under one botanical name. Here is where the difference lies and what to write in an enquiry.

Extract, fraction and purified substance

A simple centella extract contains everything the solvent pulled out: actives, sugars, salts, colouring components. It is cheap, works at high dosages and varies from batch to batch.

A purified substance is a different product. Asiaticoside at 36–44 per cent, supplied by the Indian company Sunpure, is an isolated and standardised fraction. It costs more per kilogram, but it goes into a formulation at fractions of a per cent, and the final cost per unit of product can turn out comparable.

Why the percentage matters more than the name

The 36–44 per cent range is not a marketing figure but a commitment: the producer confirms the content in the certificate of analysis for every batch. That is precisely what lets a formulator calculate a dosage and get the same product time after time.

If an offer states only «Centella Asiatica Extract» with no percentage and no marker, you cannot compare it with a competitor's offer. It would be comparing the price per kilogram of one unknown with the price per kilogram of another.

What this means for a scalp product

For a rinse-off shampoo the difference between a cheap extract and a purified fraction is often immaterial: contact is short and most of it washes away. For a leave-in tonic or an ampoule it becomes tangible, because there the dosage and the purity of the raw material feed directly into the result.

The practical conclusion: do not buy a purified substance for a place where it will be rinsed away within a minute, and do not economise on it where the product stays on the scalp. That is the most common way to spend money in the wrong place.

What to state in the enquiry

The required marker content and tolerance. The analytical method. The form: powder or solution, and if a solution, the carrier. The intended dosage and the product type. The destination market and the confirmations you need. And the annual volume: it moves the price more than anything else.

A supplier who replies with a specification and a sample certificate of analysis saves you a month. One who sends only a price list leaves the whole verification to you.
