A ready Korean brand or your own label: how to choose between them

The same factory often offers both. How the two routes differ in money, timing and risk — and who each of them suits.

A buyer coming to Korean cosmetics almost always meets this fork. Take a ready brand with its own story and packaging — or build a line under your own label. Factories often offer both, and that does not make the choice easier.

A ready brand: faster and cheaper at the entrance

The product exists, the packaging is designed, the formula is registered at least on the home market, the photography is there. Minimum orders are usually lower, because you are buying from stock or from a planned production run.

The price for that is that you do not own the brand. The factory may sell it to your neighbour too, unless the territory is closed by agreement. So the first question on this route is always the same: is your territory free, and what evidences that.

Your own label: more expensive at the entrance, but it is your asset

Here you pay for development, samples and artwork, and you usually clear a higher batch threshold. Lead times add specification approval and packaging printing on top of production.

In exchange you get something your neighbour cannot buy. With this format the registration is normally taken out in your name rather than in the name of someone else's brand owner, although the procedure depends on each country's rules. On some markets that weighs more than price.

What to ask a factory that does both

First: the minimum order on each route separately — the figures are almost always different. Second: what development costs and what it includes, down to the number of samples and their delivery.

Third: whose documents and test reports you receive under private label, and in whose name they are issued. Fourth: timing. Development adds approvals to production, and the calendar should be counted from a confirmed specification, not from the first letter.

What it looks like in one example

Korean company SEUNGGUN COSMETICS runs its own brand, LOOBEE, and at the same time offers OEM, ODM and private label. For a buyer that means you can start with the finished line, watch how it sells, and only then discuss your own label with the same manufacturer.

That order lowers the risk: you test the factory on its own product, where everything is already settled, before spending on development.
