Sticks instead of jars: why Korean weight management moved into sachets

Almost the whole Korean weight management category is packed into single-use sticks. Convenience is only part of the reason: the format changes shopper behaviour and the economics of a shipment alike.

Open the catalogue of almost any Korean brand in the weight management category and you will find very few jars. The main form is a single-use stick for one serving. Of the seven SPRX items, six come exactly that way: in 3 g, 9 g, 15 g and 30 g, and the only exception is the capsules. This is not an accident of presentation but the settled standard of the category.

What the stick gives the shopper

It removes the main problem of products like these — the need to measure out a dose. The serving is already measured, there is no way to get it wrong, and the regimen becomes easier to follow: three sticks a day with Watermix Zero or one stick with Alpha CD Calozero can be read off the pack without any instructions.

The second thing is the usage scenario itself. A stick fits in a pocket, so the product is not tied to the home. In a category where the result depends on regularity, that affects repeat purchase more strongly than the formula does.

What it changes for the importer

A box of 14, 21 or 30 sticks sets a natural course of use and a clear price per course, and that logic makes the shelf and promotions easier to build. At the same time packaging takes a larger share of the shipment weight, and the shipping cost per gram of product comes out higher than for a jar of the same net weight.

There is also a requirement on the packaging itself: every stick carries mandatory labelling, so adapting the text to your market touches not only the box but the print on the film. That is a separate line in the budget and a separate lead time.

What to ask the factory

Check the laminate material and its compatibility with the climate of your market, especially if the product is hygroscopic. Ask about the shelf life specifically in the stick and about storage conditions in the retailer’s warehouse. Find out whether the stick is printed as a separate run and what the minimum batch for printing the film is — it is often higher than the minimum batch of the product itself.

And verify how the weight is counted: at SPRX, for example, the net weight of a box follows directly from the pack size, 9 g per stick across 21 sticks gives 189 g. If the arithmetic in the documents does not add up, that is the first sign that the figures were carried over from another item.
